Dent Removal in Edinburgh — Faster, Smarter, Better Value

Dents and scratches are an unavoidable part of driving in a city. Edinburgh car parks, narrow Gorgie and Leith backstreets, supermarket trolleys, minor shunts on Princes Street — they all leave their mark. The good news is that most dents and many scratches can be repaired to an invisible standard without the time and expense of a traditional body filler and repaint approach. At Fair Deal Accident Expert, we use paintless dent repair (PDR) and precision scratch correction techniques that can often return your vehicle to a perfect finish in a fraction of the time and cost of conventional repair.

The key advantage of paintless dent repair is exactly what it sounds like — we remove the dent without touching the paint. No filler, no repainting, no risk of a colour mismatch, no long curing times. When PDR is appropriate for the damage (which it is in a large proportion of cases), the result is a panel that is visually and structurally indistinguishable from how it was before the dent occurred. Your original factory paint remains intact — and that matters both for the appearance and for the long-term value of your vehicle.

What Is Paintless Dent Repair (PDR)?

Paintless dent repair is a specialist technique developed in the 1980s and now the industry standard for appropriate dent removal. It involves using specially designed metal rods and body picks — as well as sometimes glue tabs applied to the outside of the dent — to gradually massage the dented metal back to its original shape from behind. The process requires considerable skill and experience, an ability to read the metal and understand how it is deformed, and patience — rushing PDR produces poor results.

PDR works because modern automotive steel has a degree of memory — it can be persuaded back to its original position if the deformation has not been so severe that the metal has stretched beyond its elastic limit. Technicians use specialist LED lighting to illuminate the surface of the dent and reveal its full extent and shape, then work methodically to massage the metal back from the lowest point outward. The process can take anywhere from thirty minutes for a small simple dent to several hours for larger, more complex deformations.

Not every dent is suitable for paintless dent repair. Dents where the paint has cracked or creased, dents at panel edges or on body lines where there is no access behind the metal, or dents where the steel has stretched significantly may require conventional repair with filler and repainting. Our technicians will always carry out an honest assessment and tell you clearly which approach is appropriate for your damage — and why.

When Is Traditional Dent Repair Used?

For dents that are not suitable for PDR — typically because the paint has cracked, the metal has stretched, or access behind the panel is impossible — we use traditional body repair techniques. This involves carefully reshaping the panel using body tools, applying a thin skim of high-quality body filler to achieve a perfectly flat surface, then building up primer and paint coats using our computerised colour-matching system before applying a clear lacquer topcoat.

The critical word there is “thin.” A good conventional dent repair uses as little filler as possible — just enough to correct minor surface imperfections after the metal has been reshaped. Excessive filler is the mark of a poor repairer. It shrinks, it cracks, it fails. Our technicians are skilled at getting the metal into the best possible shape before any filler is applied, which means the filler layer is minimal and the repair will last indefinitely.

Scratch Repair and Removal in Edinburgh

Scratches range from very superficial surface marks that have only affected the clear lacquer layer, to deep gouges that have penetrated through to the metal beneath. The appropriate repair technique depends entirely on the depth and nature of the scratch.

Superficial scratches in the clear coat can often be corrected by machine polishing alone — a skilled polisher using a rotary or dual-action polisher can remove light surface marks and restore the depth of the clear coat finish without any painting at all. This is the fastest and least expensive option and produces excellent results when the scratch truly has not penetrated the colour layer.

Deeper scratches that have penetrated through the colour layer or into the primer require repainting. In these cases, we prepare the scratched area carefully, apply primer, build up the colour coats using our computerised colour-matching system, and apply a clear coat topcoat. For localised scratches, we can often blend the new paint seamlessly into surrounding areas so the repair is not visible.

For scratches that have reached bare metal, prompt repair is particularly important. Exposed steel rusts very quickly in Edinburgh's wet climate, and what starts as a surface scratch can develop into a significant rust problem within weeks if it is not addressed. We always carry out a free assessment and give you an honest recommendation on the best course of action.

Hail Damage Repair in Edinburgh

While Edinburgh does not suffer from severe hail as frequently as some parts of the UK, hail damage events do occur — and when they do, they can leave a vehicle covered in dozens or even hundreds of small dents across the roof, bonnet, boot, and panels. Hail damage is one of the scenarios where PDR really shines. Because hail impacts typically create small, shallow dents that have not cracked the paint, PDR is usually entirely appropriate — and we can address all of the dents in a single visit without any repainting.

If you have been unfortunate enough to have your vehicle caught in a hail storm, contact us as soon as possible. We will carry out a full assessment of the damage, confirm that PDR is appropriate, and give you a detailed estimate. Hail damage is often covered by comprehensive insurance policies — and we can help with the insurance claim process if required.

How much does dent removal cost in Edinburgh?

The cost depends on the size, location, and nature of the dent. A small simple PDR repair might cost from £60–£100. Larger or more complex dents requiring traditional repair and repainting will cost more. We always provide a written estimate before any work begins.

Can all dents be repaired without painting?

No — PDR is appropriate when the paint is intact and the metal has not stretched significantly. Dents at panel edges, on body lines, or where the paint has cracked require conventional repair with filler and repainting. We will always tell you honestly which approach is right for your damage.

How long does dent repair take?

A simple PDR repair can take as little as 30 minutes. Larger PDR jobs might take a few hours. Traditional dent repairs with repainting typically take one to two days including drying and curing time.
