Windscreen & Auto Glass Repair in Edinburgh β€” Act Before It Spreads

A small chip in your windscreen can seem like a minor annoyance β€” something to deal with later, when you get a chance. The reality is quite different. Edinburgh roads are particularly hard on glass, and chips left untreated will spread. Temperature changes β€” the kind we see regularly in Scotland, with cold nights and warmer daytime temperatures β€” cause the glass to expand and contract, and a chip that was a few millimetres across on Monday morning can become a crack running most of the width of the windscreen by Friday. Once a crack extends beyond the repairable zone, you are looking at a full windscreen replacement rather than a quick, inexpensive chip repair.

At Fair Deal Accident Expert, we carry out windscreen chip repairs, full windscreen replacements, and side and rear glass replacements for all makes and models of vehicle. Our Edinburgh body shop has the equipment and expertise to handle both emergency glass replacement after an accident and routine chip repairs before they become a more expensive problem. We also carry out the ADAS camera and sensor recalibration that many modern vehicles require after a windscreen replacement β€” an increasingly important service as driver assistance technology becomes more common.

Windscreen Chip Repair β€” When Is It Possible?

Not every chip can be repaired. Whether a chip is repairable depends on several factors: its size, its location on the windscreen, how long it has been there, and whether it has begun to spread into a crack. Here are the general guidelines our technicians use:

Size. Chips up to approximately 40mm in diameter (roughly the size of a 50-pence coin) are generally repairable. Chips larger than this typically involve too much damage to the glass matrix to achieve an optically acceptable result from a repair.

Location. Chips directly in the driver's primary vision zone β€” the area swept by the windscreen wipers directly in front of the driver's line of sight β€” are treated with more caution. Even a successfully repaired chip may leave a slight optical distortion, and in the driver's direct line of vision, this can be distracting. In these cases, we will advise you honestly on whether repair or replacement is the better choice.

Whether it has started to crack. Once a chip has developed arms or legs β€” small cracks radiating from the impact point β€” repair is still possible in many cases, but it becomes more critical to act quickly before those cracks extend further.

Contamination. If a chip has been present for some time and has become contaminated with road dirt, water, or other substances in the cavity, the repair can be more challenging and the optical result less clear. This is another good reason to address chips promptly.

How Does Windscreen Chip Repair Work?

Windscreen chip repair is a precise process using specialist resin and vacuum injection equipment. Here is how a typical chip repair is carried out at our Edinburgh workshop:

First, the chip and any cracks radiating from it are cleaned, and any loose glass fragments are carefully removed. Any moisture or contamination is then drawn out of the chip cavity using a vacuum. This preparation stage is crucial β€” if anything is left in the cavity, the resin will not adhere properly and the optical result will be poor.

A specialist injector is then placed over the chip. This device alternates between creating a vacuum (to draw the resin deep into the cavity and any cracks) and positive pressure (to force the resin further in). The UV-curing resin used is formulated to have similar optical properties to the laminated glass itself, which is why a successful repair is difficult to see.

Once the resin has filled the cavity, it is cured using a UV lamp, then the surface is polished flat. The entire process typically takes 30 to 45 minutes, and the vehicle can be driven immediately after.

Windscreen Replacement β€” What to Expect

When a chip has spread into a crack, or when the damage is too large or too centrally located to repair, full windscreen replacement is required. At Fair Deal, we use OEM-quality glass from trusted suppliers that meets or exceeds the original manufacturer's specification. This matters more than most drivers realise β€” cheap, non-specification glass can have subtle optical distortions, may not meet the acoustic performance of the original, and critically, may not be compatible with the camera and sensor systems mounted to the windscreen.

Our windscreen replacement process includes the careful removal of the old screen, preparation and priming of the aperture, installation of the new screen using the correct adhesive, and a cure time to ensure a properly bonded, watertight installation. Most replacements are completed within a half-day, and we include a full check of all seals and the screen heating element (where fitted) as part of the process.

ADAS Camera Recalibration β€” A Critical Step Modern Drivers Overlook

This is perhaps the most important development in windscreen replacement over the last few years, and it is one that many drivers β€” and even some less experienced glass fitters β€” are not fully aware of. A large proportion of modern vehicles have forward-facing cameras mounted to or immediately behind the windscreen. These cameras are the eyes of systems including lane departure warning, lane keep assist, autonomous emergency braking, traffic sign recognition, and adaptive cruise control.

These camera systems are calibrated to the precise angle and position of the original windscreen. When a windscreen is replaced, even a tiny difference in the position of the new screen β€” which is virtually unavoidable β€” means the camera is no longer looking at quite the right angle. The result can be ADAS systems that do not work correctly: lane departure warnings that trigger unexpectedly or not at all, emergency braking that activates unnecessarily or fails to activate when it should, and a host of other potential issues.

Recalibration after windscreen replacement is not optional β€” it is a safety-critical step. At Fair Deal, we include ADAS camera recalibration as part of every windscreen replacement on vehicles where it is required. We use specialist calibration equipment and manufacturer-approved processes to ensure your safety systems are working correctly before the vehicle leaves our workshop.

Our Edinburgh glass and windscreen repair service covers the whole of the city and surrounding area. We regularly see vehicles from Gorgie, Dalry, Corstorphine, Murrayfield, Morningside, Leith, Portobello, Musselburgh, Dalkeith, Loanhead, South Queensferry, and beyond. Does my insurance cover windscreen repair?

Most comprehensive policies include windscreen cover, often with a zero or reduced excess for chip repairs. Some policies cover full replacements too. Contact us and we can advise on making an insurance claim and handle the process on your behalf.

Will a repaired chip be visible?

A successful chip repair significantly reduces the visibility of the damage. In most cases, it is very difficult to see once repaired. However, we will be honest with you if we believe the result may not be fully optically clear β€” particularly if the chip is in your direct line of sight.

How long does windscreen replacement take?

A full windscreen replacement typically takes two to three hours including the bonding cure time and any ADAS calibration. We will give you a specific timescale when you book.
